Currently in Israel, there is a lot of persecution, particularly of Messianic Jews (Jews who believe in Jesus, or Yeshua, as their Messiah) by a sect of the Orthodox community. In the town of Arad, just west of the Dead Sea in the Negev desert, the persecution has been steadily escalating for a number of years.

People have been beaten and a storefront church which was primarily used as a chess club and outreach center was firebombed, all while the local authorities do nothing to stop the violence.

There are large demonstrations outside congregations during worship services and outside private homes, while the harassment extends even to women and children on the street.

I had a chance to visit Arad twice in 2005 to document the events taking place and to witness the persecution first hand. It was interesting to see how simply by associating with the believers there, I was branded a missionary and was told I was a "cancer to Israel."
